How to start a Record label
Name and Genre:
In order to create your own record label, you first need to come up with a name for your record label (for example, "Skeleton Head Music"). This name can be based on the type of music that you want to record and produce (e.g., genre = Indie Rock Goth). This can also get you thinking what type of artists/bands you want to seek out and record.
Who?
The next thing you need to do is figure out who you need for your record label. A list of people that you would need could include the following: A+R, Mixers, Lawyers, Sound Engineers, Producers, Studio Engineers, PR, Managers, Agents, Instrument Maintenance Worker, Social Media Manager, Recording Engineers, Mastering Engineer, Songwriter (optional - depends on if you want to have the artists write their own music or not), Session Musicians, Arranger, Composer, Lyricist (again, optional - depends on who you want to write the music), Studio Technician.
Scale:
You also need to decide on the scale of your Record Label. How big do you want it to be? Do you want to focus on one niche genre or do you want to do multiple or do you want to do any type of music? How many people do you want to work for your record label? Do you want to take on a lot of the roles by yourself?
What?
Another thing you need to decide is about the profits and the money. What I mean by this is how much, as a percentage, the artist gets and how much your record label gets. For example, it could be that 40% of the royalties go to the artist and 60% go to your record label. On top of this, you also need to think of what you physically need to start this studio. Some examples are: a studio to work in, amps, instruments (possibly, but this is optional), cables, microphones, mixing desk, music software etc.
