My brother is making a game and he's relatively far through it. It's a clicker game but with slightly more to it as it basically has zombies coming towards a wall and the player has to click on the zombies to kill them and they can heal the wall as well as collect resources from the mine and this is all based on clicking things. They can also upgrade things. He wanted music for his game and gave me a specific brief on how he wanted it to work.
He wanted to have different levels of intensity depending on the amount of enemies on the screen and he wanted to have about 6 different 8 second loops per intensity level. The minimum amount of intensity levels would be around three (although there would probably be more) which means a minimum of 18 different loops to suit the intensity. He wants all of the loops to be able to naturally lead into any of the other loops so that it doesn't sound disjointed or strange.
He sent me four references of music that he wants it to be like but he said that he didn't want it to be entirely like any of them but as a sort of crossover of them all in its own unique thing. These are the four links he sent me: 0:22 - 0:30, 1:28 - 1:36, 4:00, "This but less outerspace style"
I listened to the four tracks and the first one seemed more calm as well as the third one. I took most of my inspiration from the first one with the arpeggiated notes as well as slightly distorted, old game sounding music. I used Bandlab to create an idea although I plan to use Logic in the future for the final sounds. Here's what I created:
In order to get the sound that I wanted, I added some distortion to a synth sound to make it sound more similar to the music that he sent me. These won't be the final sounds used as, like I said, I aim to make the final versions on Logic but it'll give a basic idea as to what my brother wants for his game and so what I need to do.
I sent the piece of music to him and he said that he liked it and that it was a perfect crossover of the four references that he sent me as he couldn't really find one that was exactly what he wanted but he liked what I'd made. I'm going to try and make some more music in the same style but different (he wants variety otherwise it could get incredibly boring listening to the same thing over and over).
I've now made another small piece of music and all I did was change the melody and drums but not the other two instruments (bass and staccato bass). Here's the other piece of music I made:
I'm not sure if my brother will like this or if he will think it still sounds too similar and boring. It would be much easier (presuming that it works well) for each one of the intensity levels to have the same foundational parts on every loop but then melody and drums change or something else but if there's always at least one thing that stays consistent through all of the tracks in a specific loop group then it'll flow much better as well as making my job easier.
I've created a third piece of music by doing the same thing of keeping the bass and the staccato/arpeggiated part the same (and so also the chord progression) but then I redid the melody and redid the drums to fit the new melody. You can see this other piece here:
I've made two more pieces of music but I won't include those as it might get very repetitive. I just followed the same system of having the bass and arpeggios the same but then changed the melody and the drums. I've sent them all to my brother and he's going to properly listen to them when he gets home from work and then let me know whether or not they fit what he had in mind.
