A1 - Connecting Dots

Image
I decided to add a new song to my usual set list of four that I use for open mics as I wanted to be able to switch out my material and have more repertoire to choose from. I chose a newish song that I wrote called "Connecting Dots" but I knew I needed to properly prepare it before performing it as there was plenty there that I was definitely not confident about. When beginning to practice the song, I didn't know the words very well and so I kept forgetting them especially at "my throat is tight" and at the beginning of the bridge. I did have the words on paper beside me but I tried not to look at it as in an attempt to help me learn the words. I also had trouble getting the right chords as I was so used to playing the other four songs at open mics, my hand often resorted to what I was used to (e.g., I often went from Am to D instead of G due to this pattern in "Stronger"). I managed to mostly remember the melody correctly other than for the bridge as i...

A1 - Separated by Water

Madison wrote a song for her A3 assignment and she wanted me to play piano for it as well as doubling up the vocals. It uses an AB (binary) structure and so it was relatively easy to remember the structure of the song. Despite this, I had trouble with the chords as I'd often forget, in the context of the song, to switch from C F Dm C to G G E which meant I fumbled the chords a bit. I think that this will improve over time as I remember the structure more. Something else that hindered my playing was that I struggle to play in time and so I'd often play the chords at the wrong moment which I'd panic at and then fumble and forget what I was doing. Something I did to try and overcome this was that I looked at the chords Madison was playing in order to see when she changed chords as an indication. I also did struggle a bit with the words and so had them on my phone in front of me but I mainly focused on the piano which is shown in the fact that my mouth barely moves and I mumb...

A1 - Demons In My Head

Image
/22/04/2024/ I've been working with Madison (piano), Nimai (Bass) and Barnaby (Drums) to be able to play my song "Demons In My Head" at the Red Brick Building gig which is a launch gig for the Strode Live Album 2024. We've played this song previously for another gig but we haven't played it for a while and so we were bringing it back to our memories with the addition of having Barnaby on the drum kit rather than on the cajon as we're trying to make it as similar to the recording on the album as possible. In this rehearsal, we struggled with timing as we commonly got faster (especially on the pre-chorus and chorus) and this threw me off as I'm already aware that my timing is dodgy and I've massively struggled with it in the past and it's something that I'm improving on with practice. Other than the timing, I think the rehearsal went very well as everybody remembered their parts and when we did go out of time, we communicated with one another t...

The Future Of The Music Industry: I think that the music industry is likely to change rapidly in multiple ways in the future - many of which could be considered bad or good depending on how you view them. I'm going to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of: physical copies of music, streaming, AI, working remotely and social media.  Physical Music: Recently, an increase in the ownership of physical copies of music has occurred and this has been known as the vinyl revival and is most notably seen in the year 2020 when there was 20-25 million sales of vinyl in the US. This is likely due to the Covid pandemic causing people to be stuck inside and therefore streaming music more frequently - treating it as a radio.  I think that the future is likely to hold a further increase in the demand and release of vinyl and CDs for multiple reasons. A vinyl can come with collectible items as, a record tending to be quite large, it is able to also encase things such as clothing, posters ...
